Forbes magazine has ranked the University of South Alabama among its Top 15 Patent-Revenue-Generating Universities of the Nation.

The rankings, according to Forbes, were based on a 2006 survey of 189 schools conducted by the Association of University Technology Managers. The 189 schools generated $1.5 billion in research-related income, according to Forbes. Schools were graded by the percentage return on research dollars invested.

USA's 2006 research expenditures totaled $20.6 million, while its research-related income was $1.2 million -- a 5.9 percent yield. New York University topped the list with $210 million in research expenditures and $157 million in research-related income, a 75 percent yield.

Forbes noted that USA's "patent revenue should continue to rise" in part because of the Mitchell Cancer Institute, which began seeing patients last month. The magazine also listed Oxigon, a drug to treat Alzheimer's disease, as one of the school's top patents.
